Le travail de Séverin Guelpa se caractérise avant tout par la variété des formes que prennent ses réalisations ainsi qu'un besoin permanent de mener plusieurs projets en parallèle, associatifs, curatoriaux et plastiques.

Sa démarche ne se limite pas uniquement à la réalisation de sculptures ou d’installations mais prend sens dans une multitude de domaines investis et d’activités menées. En alternant une production d’artiste plasticien à l’organisation d’expositions et la gestion d’espaces consacrés à l’art, il envisage son action comme un ensemble d’activités complémentaires et nécessaires qui composent chacune une partie de son travail.

S’inspirant de faits du quotidien, de l’actualité et du contexte sociopolitique dans lequel il vit, sa création s’intéresse particulièrement à la manière dont les rapports sociaux et le statut socioculturel de chacun déterminent le comportement. Il travaille sur la relation au pouvoir ainsi que les limites physiques, humaines et territoriales. Les actes, les situations ou les espaces sont abordés comme autant d’objets de convoitise et de spéculation. L’idée d’effort, d’ambition ou encore de concurrence est souvent centrale, comme pour questionner les limites de l’action humaine ou son emprise réelle sur la réalité.

En jouant sur la valeur subjective ou symbolique des lieux qu’il investit, des situations qu’il choisit ou des matériaux qu’il utilise, il associe à son travail des références empruntées aux champs des mouvements sociaux, de l’histoire politique ou encore de l’architecture.

Le lien entre la création artistique et le contexte dans lequel il évolue est permanent. Se cumulent à sa création artistique personnelle de nombreuses autres activités. Il codirige l’espace d’art Zabriskie Point, arrêt de bus réaffecté en galerie et situé au cœur de Genève, qui programme des artistes internationaux dont le travail questionne des enjeux sociaux, politiques, culturels ou encore économiques. Cet espace répond au souhait de rapprocher l’art contemporain de la population dans une logique d’échange, de rencontre et de médiation.

Il travaille également autour de questions liées à l’espace public et son appropriation collective. Il co-dirige Espace temporaire, projet d’art protéiforme à l’origine de différents événements à Genève dont une importante exposition dans l’espace public en septembre 2011 présentant des artistes européens concernés par ces questions. Parallèlement, il participe avec d’autres artistes à la création et l’organisation de lieux pour la culture dont les ateliers du Vélodrome à Genève. Il collabore enfin avec différents collectifs à l’amélioration des conditions de travail des artistes et de leur protection sociale.

The work of Severin Guelpa is characterized by the variety of forms taken by his projects and an ongoing need to run several projects in parallel, associative, curatorial or artistic ones.
His approach is not  only limited to the realization of sculptures and installations but makes use of a variety of areas and activities. Working at the same time on his own productions, on the art direction of exhibitions and on the management of art spaces, he sees his role as a set of complementary activities that together make up his work.

Inspired by everyday life, news and the socio-political context in which he lives, his work  is particularly concerned with the way social relations and socio-cultural status determine behaviour. He works on the relationship between power and physical, human and territorial limits. Acts, situations or areas are considered as objects of desire and speculation. Concepts such as effort, ambition or competition often take centre stage, as a way of questioning the limits of human action and its influence on reality. By playing on the subjective or symbolic value of the places or situations he invests, he combines references to fields of social movements, political history or architecture.

There is a constant link between his artistic creation and the context in which he operates. His personal artistic creation is broadened by his participation in many other activities. He runs, in conjunction with other artists, the art space Zabriskie Point, a bus station reassigned in a gallery in the centre of Geneva, which exhibits international artists working on social, political, cultural or economical questions. This space responds to a desire to bring contemporary art to the public in a logic of exchange and mediation.
He also works on issues related to public spaces and collective ownership. He is co-director of Espace temporaire, a multifaceted art project at the origin of different events in Geneva. In September 2011, a major exhibition was organized in public with European artists involved in these issues. At the same time, he participated with other artists in the creation and organization of working spaces for artists like the Velodrome in Geneva. Finally, he collaborated with various groups to improve the working conditions of artists and their welfare.
